Applications' processing standards likely to return normal by the end of the year - Minister Fraser

The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration of the Canadian Parliament questioned the immigration minister about the 2.1 million persons on the IRCC's backlog. As of April 29, the IRCC's inventory included almost 2.1 million applications awaiting outcomes on citizenship, immigration, and temporary residency. Since April 2021, the temporary housing inventory has more than double.

Fraser also told the committee that IRCC plans to bring processing times to normal by the end of the calendar year for the number of business lines.
"I think we'll be able to achieve it—on the majority of lines of business—potentially this calendar year," Fraser said, adding that "where we can't, we should be broadcasting those timelines."
"I'm extremely pleased about new flexibilities we're going to pursue in the Express Entry system that will allow us to target employees to fill shortages in crucial industries as quickly as feasible under the present system," Fraser remarked before being cut off due to time constraints. Throughout the rest of the discussion, the minister did not elaborate.
IRCC will reinstate Express Entry to all applicants in July. On May 26, IRCC invited 589 Express Entry candidates to apply for permanent residency. All of the invited candidates should have been nominated through a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). This time, the cut-off (CRS) was 741.
IRCC's attempts to reduce application wait times include adding more professionals to its 11,000-person staff and upgrading the immigration system. Already, efforts to modernize have helped IRCC make 156,000 permanent residency applications in the first quarter of 2022.
